Working With and Modifying the GRUB Bootloader
Whenever your computer starts, you’ll
see the GRUB Linux bootloader, which will give you the option of choosing
to boot to Windows XP or to Linux (Figure 186).
If you wait and can’t make up your mind after a reasonable time,
the PC will boot to Windows, assuming you selected Windows as the default.
Windows XP also comes with its own
bootloader. So, for example, if you have Windows 98 installed and then
install Windows XP, the XP bootloader would allow a dual boot between
Windows 98 and Windows XP. Windows 98 doesn’t provide a bootloader,
so you couldn’t install Windows XP before Windows 98.
We’re going to show you how
to modify the GRUB bootloader. This step is optional.
