There are two different "policies" for controlling the way writes to memory are done in a cached system: a "write through" cache means that memory writes are sent to memory as soon as the processor sends out the information; a "write back" cache means the processor writes the information only to the cache, which later writes the information to memory at the appropriate time. Write back is in most cases superior to write-through; the differences are explained here.
